An investigation into the use of metadiscourse in undergraduates’ abstracts in social sciences

Abstract There is very little research on the use of metadiscourse markers in abstracts across different disciplines (especially a single study) undergraduates as novice researchers, and qualitative has been done topic EFL ESL contexts altogether. Thus, purpose this study to examine undergraduates’ social sciences three (English Language Communication, Mass Psychology) Faculty Social Sciences Liberal Arts at UCSI University, Malaysian private university. We adopt Hyland’s (2005) interpersonal model which involves two main categories – interactive interactional analyse all 62 collected from 2016 Colloquium held faculty. The method used categorize accordingly well counting their frequencies. findings showed that were nearly twice often discourse for disciplines, most are boosters. transitions, followed by frame markers, evidentials, code glosses, endophoric markers. can be instructors when teaching students learning argumentative writing make arguments write proper critiques reflect stance voice. This adds some insights into neglected genre academic undergraduate level.
